When worldwide organisations like UNICEF, Google, Yahoo and Bing – all of whom employ an army of top security experts, can be compromised, then no individual surfing the internet is safe without adequate protection.
Adopting good working practices helps. If you don’t need to be connected to the Internet then don’t. Turn off the router when it’s not in use. It takes mere seconds to connect these days. Do not open attachments or click links in emails unless you are 100% sure that the email is genuine.
Infected attachments are currently – in no particular order – zip files, PDFs, Word docs and Excel docs. Very often these will be a downloader that will install rogue malware that actually does the damage.
